John Sumanth

John is an award-winning educator and researcher who has extensive experience coaching senior-level executives, legal professionals, and top United States military officers and government leaders in organizations such as the Army, Special Operations, and Veterans Affairs. Prior to academia, he spent nearly a decade working in high-profile strategic planning, marketing, and research and development positions for Fortune 1000 multinational firms in the insurance, global tourism, and fast-food industries.

John’s research focuses on issues of employee voice and upward communication, leadership, and status. His research has appeared in premier management and applied psychology journals such as Harvard Business Review, Administrative Science Quarterly, and Journal of Applied Psychology.

John holds a doctorate in organizational behavior from the University of North Carolina Kenan-Flagler Business School, a master’s degree in marketing and management from the University of Florida Warrington College of Business, and a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering (cum laude) from the University of Miami. He is a member of Omicron Delta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, Golden Key, Tau Beta Pi, and Iron Arrow, the University of Miami’s highest honor.

John and his wife, Jaya, spend their days raising their two amazing daughters and their aloof (but loving) beagle, Hunter. In his free time, John enjoys watching college and professional Miami sports teams, grilling and smoking meats, spending time with family and friends, and relaxing at the beach or in the beautiful mountains of North Carolina.
